The O Story

Otis the olive octopus swam happily in the warm ocean eating oysters from the oyster

bed and playing hide and go seek with his friend Oscar the oddly pink squid while

squirting ink at each other.  Otis danced an old fashioned dance on his way to find his

friend Omari the orange starfish. Omari was sitting on a very large round rock on the

bottom of the ocean watching Orlando the one-lined pencilfish swim by. Otis invited

Omari to join him in eating oysters at the oyster bed near the opening he called home.

“I would be delighted to join you!,” said Omari.

Otis and Omari swam to the oyster bed and were suddenly surprised by the Oakland

Otter family who were very occupied with eating as many oysters as they could while

floating over the bed.

“Oh! What a mess they are making!,” yelled Omari. “Will there be any left for us to eat?”

“Don’t worry about how much we eat here!,” snapped Orion Oakland. “ You need to

occupy your time observing the oil slick on the ocean surface that has been drifting this

way since October!”

“It has ruined everything in its path. That is why we are here to eat. The oil has covered

all our food near our home.”

“Oh no!,” said Otis. “That is so sad. What caused the oil slick?”

“One of those old oil barges hit some of the coral which opened a hole in the bottom and

all of the oil leaked into the ocean.”

“Everyone will have to move until the human oil technicians clean it up..” said Ophelia

Oakley.

“It was so much better when humans used boats of oak with oars!,” stated Omari.

Soon, Owen and Olympia, the Orcas swam by.

“We are looking for a large school of oblique banded butterflyfish. Did you see any pass

by?, ” asked Owen.

“No we have not.,” said Otis. “How far is the oil slick from us now?”

“ I would say maybe three days away, but it looks like the human oil technicians are

trying to clean it now.,” said Olympia.

“ Maybe we won’t have to move and we can just observe.,” said Omari.

On the hour of one o’clock, Oden, the water police officer arrived with the official report

on the status of the oil slick.

“ From the observation of the Office of the Oceanic Science Organization, the oil spill of

October from the Orange barge has been officially removed from the ocean!,”

announced Officer Oden. “ You may return to the oyster beds of your ocean.”

“Wonderful!,” said Otis and Omari. “Now let’s sit down and enjoy our oysters!”

The J Story

It was time for a friendly competition of playground games. They called it a playground playoff

for prizes. Jenny chose Jessica and Jill chose Jayla for their teammates. They decided to have it

at The Johnson Park Playground on the first weekend in June. They would compete in jump

rope, jacks and jumpsie. The jump rope would be single, double dutch, and music jam. The

snacks would be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, jam cookies with seven jugs of juice. They

would wear jeans and green tee-shirts with yellow jello tennis shoes. They would jump for

jacks, jewelry, and jigsaw puzzles. They even would compete with their jump rope rhymes!

Jerrie and Jan would be the judges of the games.

Jayla said,”I’ll make the flyers and Jill, you can help post them.”

Soon flyers were hung, prizes packed, music selected, sandwiches made and shopping was

done.

The first weekend of June had finally arrived. The weather was sunny, warm and bright. The

Johnson Park Playground was packed! The whole neighborhood was there to see the jump

rope playoff. The judges, Jerrie and Jan, were sitting at their table. Juno, Jenny’s older sister,

used her old cheerleading megaphone to announce the start of the playoff games. The single

jump was the first competition with Jenny, Jill, Jessica and Jayla. Jenny won first place for

jumping rope five minutes without stopping, Jayla won second place and Jessica won third. The

girls won jewelry and jawbreakers as prizes.

Everyone took a break and had peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches, strawberry jam

cookies, with jackfruit and juice. They chatted and rested under the trees for awhile then the

games began again. This time Juno announced the start of the double dutch playoffs. Juno

started the music on the jam box, the neighbors clapped to the beat, and the girls started to

jump to their rhymes.

……”jump so high you can reach the jet passing by”….

….”jump so fast, you pass the jeep on the 57th street overpass”…

They rotated the jumpers until all were through. Then the judges decided that Jill’s team had

won the match.

“Yeah! That’s how we do it!”, yelled Jill.

“Last but not least, will be the jumpsie playoffs!”, announced Juno.

All the neighbors gathered around to see which girl would win the jumpsie playoff.

Someone turned on the boom box and played an old familiar song with a loud beat. Each girl

went far with jumpsie, but it was Jayla who won when she used some of her gymnastic moves.

All the neighbors clapped and cheered.

Juno announced the end of the competition and the crowd cheered the winners.

The neighbors lifted the girls above their heads and carried them down the streets, home

yelling, “Hip Hip Hooray! What a wonderful way to end the day!”

Noodle Oodle Poodle

Noodle Oodle was a big blond poodle with fur that was so curly, it looked like her favorite

 food, noodles.

Her fur curls with glee when she eats macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, ziti

and tomato sauce, fettuccine, and alfredo, linguine and marinara, vermicelli and ragu,

bowtie and chili, fusilli and regatta, but not in one sitting.

She forgot she’s French and has moved to Italy.

She dreams of chefs in her sleep, like Giada de Laurentiis, Gino D’Acampo, Michael

Chiarello and of course, Chef Boyardee all preparing her pasta the best way they can be.

The hot oozing sauces dripping over the al dent pasta. A trip to Florence, Venice, Sicily or

Rome to dine on oodles of noodles is a bucket list delight!

Noodle Oodle Poodle is the canine queen of the noodles.

The F Story

Fred the dragon walked out of his cave on morning and found a box on the side of his cave.

“What’s this?” thought Fred, I wonder who left this here?”

Fred opened the box and found a letter and a map.

The letter said:

To the Young Dragon who finds this box.

It is now time for you to find your magic power.

All dragons breath fire by their eighth birthday.

Your birthday is one week from today.

Here is a map that you must follow exactly to find your fire.

It should take you one week to find your fire.

Good Luck!

Fred took the letter and the map and left his cave following the map just as it was plotted

for him to follow.  He followed a trail into the forest where he met his friend Ferdinand the

Unicorn.

“Hello, Fred!”, greeted Ferdinand. “What brings you here today?”

Fred showed him the letter and the map.

Ferdinand said, “Wow! That’s really neat! Are you going to try to find your fire?”

“ You bet I am!”, said Fred. “Gather some supplies and come with me!”

So they packed fish, fruit, french fries, fettuccine, fajitas and fudge in a basket and placed

the basket in a small wagon.

“We should be ready now!”, said Ferdinand. “Let’s leave now.”

They followed the trail further into the forest until they reached Fiveall the cat. Fiveall was

sitting on a large limb of the tree hanging over the trail.

“ My fellow friends! Where are you going on this fine Friday?”, Fiveall asked.

“We are going to help Fred find his fire and we have a map.” said Ferdinand.

“Do you mind if I come along? I never get lost.” ,said Fiveall.

“Sure” said Fred.

“I’ll bring along some extra fish and a flashlight just in case.”, said Fiveall.

They walked further into the forest and it began to get dark. Fiveall pulled out his

flashlight and turned it on. When out came Flynn the fox.

“Where is everybody going?”, asked Flynn. “ I saw the light from the flashlight.”

“ We have a map we are following to help Fred find his fire. Look.” they said.

Flynn looked at the map.

“ Your first stop will have to be the big fire rock with the number

five on it by the brook. I know just where that is! I’ll take you to it!”, said Flynn.

So they kept walking down the winding trail until they reached the big rock as red as a fire.

On top of the rock was Frank the frog.

“Hey!”  ,croaked Frank. “ What are you looking for?”

‘The red fire rock with the number five on it.”

“Well this is it!  You need to be looking down not up.” said Frank.

They walked around it until the found the number five on it.  Then they looked down and

they found a magnifying glass with a note that said…. TAKE THIS WITH YOU.

“Well” said Fiveall, “ I guess you need to take it with us on our trip.”

So Fred took the magnifying glass and placed it into the wagon.

“ Where to next?” asked Frank.

Ferdinand said, “We keep walking.”

The friends kept walking on the trail deeper into the forest. It was soon night and

everything was really dark. All of a sudden, several floating lights appeared in the air.

It was the fifteen Fantastic firefly family on a nightly practice. Mr. Fantastic said, “You’re

traveling late. Let us light your way through the night. Come on family, we have work to do!”

So the five friends and the fireflies kept walking on the trail in the forest. Then they heard

a loud WHOOO!

“ Who was that?”, asked Ferdinand.

“WHO is it at my door?”, loudly asked Fowl the owl.

“It’s me, Fred. I’m here with my friends trying to find my fire. “

“Oh, I have something for you.” said Fowl the owl.

“ Here is a compass to show you the way.” said Fowl.

“ Thanks, I’ll add it to my wagon”, said Fred.

The friends walked for six days on the trail in the forest until they reached a field.

Then out of a hole in the ground pops up Fay the Ferret.

“Where are you friends on your way to?” asked Fay.

“We are on our way to help Fred find his fire.” said Fiveall.

“ I’ve got this letter for Fred that was left here. Read what it says.” said Fay.

TO FRED: DO NOT OPEN THIS LETTER UNTIL YOU FIND YOUR FIRE.

“Thanks for the letter!” said Fred. “I won’t open it until I get there.”

The friends walked on the trail until the seventh day, they reached a large dark cave.

“Fred. I’ve been waiting for you.” said Foster the Great Falcon.

“I am the guardian of the dragon’s fire. I give fire to all the young dragons. I’m glad to see

you made it!”

‘You have arrived just in time. You will need all of the tools you found along the way. Come

into the cave and I will instruct you on how to use your tools. Your friends will need to

stand behind you as you find your fire.”

Fred took his tools and followed the instructions.

“Now take your compass and face the North, open the letter you were given and read it,

place the letter on the floor and light the letter with the light of the sun and magnifying

glass. “ said Foster.

The letter read:

This letter is written on magic paper that will light your fire by the rays of the sun.

You must quickly take a deep breath when the paper starts your fire.

Your fire will stay with you forever.

Use it wisely, hurt and damage from fires cannot be undone.

“ Everyone stand behind Fred and count to five. Fred, on the count of five, blow the fire

out of your mouth as hard as you can!” yelled Foster.

“ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR , FIVE………!

Fred blew a great ball of fire for the first time!

“Wow!” everyone yelled. “That was a big one!”

“You really found your fire!” said Ferdinand.

“Now remember to use it wisely.”  Foster reminded Fred.

“ I will.”, said Fred. “Hurt and damage from fires cannot be undone.”

“Happy Birthday Fred!” ,said Fiveall, Ferdinand, Flynn and Foster. “Now you can learn to

fly us back home!”

The B Story

The B Story

There once was a bee named Bea,

Who wanted to enter the annual styling-bee contest, because she knew that she could be more than a regular yellow and black or yellow and brown bee.

“ I leave my hive everyday and bring back such pretty colored pollen and it all gets washed off. I want to be a different colored bee.” thought Bea.

So Bea thought and thought and thought and she finally remembered! When I go to the berry patches, I sometimes get some of the juices on me! Some blue, some berry red, some purple and some black! I will take a juice bath for the styling bee contest!

Bea entered the local styling bee contest and named her entry:

A Bee of Many Colors.

On the day of the styling bee, Bea was ready with her berries and a tub of water to bathe between her change of colors. Other bees, beetles and butterflies brought bonnets, boots, bows, bandanas and bangles.

Finally it was her turn to show the judges and everyone there her new colors!

“I am about to be a blueberry bee!” she said to everyone. She jumped into the bowl of blueberries and flew around the room. She was the prettiest, bright blue berried bee anyone had ever seen!

The judges and the crowd oohed and ahhed.  Bea took a quick dip in a bowl of water then jumped into a bowl of raspberries and flew around like a tiny, red bouncing ball.

Bea took another dip into the bowl of water and then jumped into  a bowl of blackberries and turned a deep purple! The judges quickly made their decisions and said:

“THIS YEAR’S WINNER OF THE ANNUAL STYLING BEE IS…..

BEA BEE with A BEE OF MANY COLORS!”

Bea was so happy! She greeted the crowd and said:

“REMEMBER YOU CAN BE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO BE, IF YOU BELIEVE IT CAN BE!”
