The E Story

Eddy Elephant was walking across the field one sunny afternoon on his way to the

watering hole to visit his friends, when he saw something strange in the field. He stopped

and he sniffed it. He walked around it. He carefully touched it with his trunk. It did not

move or make a sound. There was no one around. It was a large egg in large nest and there

were no birds to be found. Eddy thought for a minute, now what should I do? I can’t leave

this egg here alone with no momma or friends. I’ll just sit here on it until momma comes

this way again. So Eddy sat and he sat and he sat and he sat.

Finally, Elwyn the Elk came running by. “What you doing Eddy? Why are you sitting in that

nest on that egg?”

“It was here in the nest with no momma or friends. So I’m keeping it warm until momma

comes back again!” said Eddy.

So when do you think she’s coming?” asked Elwyn. “We’re supposed to be at the watering

hole for lunch by ten.”

“ I don’t know, but I hope it’s soon! You know I get really hungry by noon!”

Elizabeth the eagle started to circle above. “Hey Eddy! What are you doing down there?”

“I’m keeping an egg warm in its nest because I care!” said Eddy.

“Where is its momma?” asked Elizabeth.

“I don’t know. It was here in the nest with no momma or friends, so I’m keeping it warm

until momma comes back again!”

“Looks like you’ll miss lunch, so we will bring it to you. We will have a picnic with great

food!”

“Yummy!” said Eddy and “Thank you too!”

Elwyn and Elizabeth bring back a feast of eggplant, egg rolls, eclairs, endive, enchiladas,

and etouffee to eat.

“My what a grand and fancy meal!”, said Eddy.”Hey! Something is moving under me!

What’s the deal?”

Around the corner in a flash, comes Erica Emu, momma to the egg. “What’s going on

here? Why are you on my egg?”

“I found your egg in the nest all alone, so I sat on it until you came home.” said Eddy.

“Hurry and sit here. I feel it starting to scratch!” “It won’t be long before it begins to

hatch!”

Erica quickly plopped down on the nest and it didn’t take long before the egg did the rest.

Out comes the chick all wet and warm! She shook her feathers and hopped to keep warm.

“Thank You!” said Erica. “Now I’m a new mom!”

“You’re welcome! You’re welcome! Ms. Erica Emu!”, said Eddy. “In the future, if you need,

I will sit on your eggs, just call me!”

The H Story

One morning Henry Hippo woke up and said, “I think I’ll visit Haley Hare’s hole. I always

have fun and find good things when I visit Haley Hare.”

So he ate a hearty breakfast of ham, honeydew and toast with honey, before starting his

trip to Haley’s hole.

No sooner than he left his back porch, Heather Hen greeted him down the path.

“Good morning Henry! Where are you going today?”, she asked.

“ I’m on my way to Haley Hare’s hole for some fun.”, Henry said.

“Can I come along?”, asked Heather.

“Sure!”, said Henry, and they walked down the trail to Haley’s hole.

They soon passed a small hole along the way and out popped Hunter Hedgehog.

“Hey guys! Where’re you going?”, he said.

“To Haley’s hole.”, clucked Heather.

“Can I come too?”, asked Hunter.

“Sure!”, said Henry as they walked down the trail.

Halfway to Haley’s hole, they pass a pasture with horses grazing.

“Good morning Henry, Heather and Hunter! Where are you going today?”, said Hannah

Horse. “We’re going to Haley’s hole. Do you want to come?”, all three asked.

“ Sure!”, said Hannah and they walked down the trail to Haley’s Hole.

Just before they reached the curve where the trail passed in front of Haley’s Hole, they

passed Hector Hog’s pen.

“Hello!”, yelled Hector. “ You going to Haley’s Hole?”

“Yes!”, they all said at once.

Hector said,” I’ll come with you.”

They finally made it to Haley’ hole and things are flying out of the hole.

“Hello Haley!”, said Henry Hippo. “What are you doing?”

Haley said, “I’m spring cleaning and remodeling my hole. Most things must go!”

Haley’s neighbors Harry Hamster, Hope Hummingbird, and Hank Hawk were also there to

help him remove the things from his hole.

“ We will give you a hand to help you too!”, said Henry Hippo and friends.

They pulled out hundreds of hats of every color and size, helmets, heads for hair, toy

helicopters, toy houses, hula hoops, an owl that hoots, a fire hydrant and hose, hooks of

all kinds, shapes and sizes, hundreds of hangers, seven harmonicas, a harpsichord, a harp,

and animal and musical horns which they played together when they stopped for a lunch

break.

Heather, Hope and Heather hung a hammock on the trees at the top of the hill, to rest

while having hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. The bees brought some of their fresh

honey from their hive.

Haley Hare gave a big speech at the end of lunch:

“Thank you everyone for coming today to give a helping hand in cleaning out my hole! You

may keep all of the things that we cleaned from the hole! I now have a bad case of the

hiccups from all of this excitement and must leave lunch early to my hole and hit the hay!

Again thank you for coming and have a great day!”

Haley’s neighbors and friends took all of the treasures and divided them among

themselves and went home.  Harry and his friends walked happily home with all of their

new treasures and promised to return another day!

The D Story

Danny dog decided to have a dance party at his doghouse. So he pulls out his cell phone

and calls his friends to help him plan his party.

“Hey Dave! What are you doing? Come on by and help me plan a dance party at my

doghouse tomorrow night.” said Danny, “and bring Derrick and Dylan with you.”

“I’ll be there in ten minutes with the guys! It sounds great to me!” said Dave.

Ten minutes later, Danny hears a knock at his door.

“Come on in!, said Danny. “ You’re just in time. How will we decorate the house?”

“ What kind of music will we be playing?”, asked Derrick.“ We can ask Donald to DJ for

us!”

“ Don’t know. How about disco, hip-hop and dance music of the 60’s, 70’s and ‘80’s?”

said Dave.

“Let’s decorate the place with dinosaurs and dragons!”, said Derrick.” I’ve got quite a few

at my place.”

“What will we eat?” asked Dylan.

“How about donuts, deep dish pizzas?” asked Dave.

“Derby cheese, deviled eggs, dried bananas and doggie biscuits?”, asked Derrick.

“Of course we can’t forget the dog bones, dip, drumsticks and dump cake!”,said Danny.

“We will mix our famous deep blue doggie punch for drinks!”,They all said.

“Let’s get started on getting this together!”,said Danny.” Everyone we tell will invite ten

of their friends.”

“Yeah, I’ll let my neighbors Darlene, Dennis, Denise and Dylan know. They will spread the

word!”, said Dave. “They will turn out the dog pound for a dance party!”

Everything was all set and ready by the next evening.

The guests all came. There were dogs from everywhere: Next door, uptown, downtown,

around town, east side, west side, north side, south side, and even beach side.

Everyone wanted to dance.

They did the dougie. They did the dub step and the dig and drop. They did the dog and of

course, they discoed the night away with Donald DJ!

Even the local dog bands showed up to play. The Dog Dragons, The Red Barons, The Blue

Healers and The Red Cliffs all played. What a night it was at Danny’s Doghouse Dance

Party!

The party went on until the last of the food was gone. It was almost dawn when the last

dog went home. Danny, Derrick and Dave agreed that this was the best doghouse dance

party ever! They were so dog tired that they fell asleep all around the doghouse.

The C Story

One bright sunny morning, Cassy Cake walked into her bakery and decided to  bake a new

and special cookie. She greeted her assistants Cory and Cindy and told them about her new

idea.

“We must mix a few old ingredients together to make a new flavor!”, she said.

Cory and Cindy were excited and they opened the old cookbook to look for the right old

recipe.

Cory asked, “Should we try peanut butter?”

“No! Let’s try sugar cookies!” ,said Cindy.

“I’ve got one better!” ,said Cassy. ”We will use a chocolate chip recipe and then add two or

three new things!”

“That sounds so good!”, said Cindy and Cory.

“Now let’s look in the pantry. We will need chocolate chips, coconut, caramel and

cinnamon.” said Cassy.

Cindy said,” We can use cream instead of butter.”

“Good idea!” ,said Cassy.

So they pulled out the big crock mixing bowl and added the ingredients. Cory and Cindy

mixed and stirred and mixed and stirred.

Cassy looked into the bowl and said, “ Now is the time to pour the mix onto the cookie

sheets and place them in the oven to bake.“

The smell was wonderful. When the cookies were ready, Cassy, Cory and Cindy each took a

cookie for taste.

“Mmmmm! They are soooo gooood!”  they squealed. “ We must sell these in the bakery!”

So Cassy, Cory and Cindy continued to bake the new cookies and the customers who

visited the bakery bought all of the cookies every day! The new cookies became so popular,

that the three spent most of their time baking cookies.

One day a special letter came to the bakery.  Cassy opened the letter and squealed to Cory

and Cindy, “ The president of Cameroon somehow tasted one of our new cookies, and now

is requesting that we send one year’s supply to his country for the people to enjoy!”

“Wonderful!”, screamed Cory and Cindy. “Let’s start baking!”

Cassy said,” I don’t know how he got some of our cookies, but we will send him the

cookies even if it is a thousand miles away.  “We need to name the cookie. What should we

name it? “

Cassy, Cory and Cindy thought and thought and finally agreed the cookie should be called

the Cameroon, for the fans in the far away land of Cameroon! They decided to pack the

Cameroons in green, red and yellow striped boxes to look like the Cameroon flag.  Cassy

shipped the cookies to the address given by the president of Cameroon. Three weeks later,

another special letter arrives at the bakery. Cassy calls Cory and Cindy into the office of

the bakery and reads the letter out loud.

“The Cameroon Cookie is so good, it has been shared all over the country of Cameroon and

is to be named the official cookie of Cameroon! We are inviting you and your bakers to the

official declaration of the Cameroon Cookie as the national cookie of the land!”

Cassy, Cory and Cindy flew  thousands of miles to Cameroon for the declaration of the

Cameroon Cookie as the national cookie of the land and were

also named the official Cameroon bakers. They received certificates, pictures and gold

medals for their baking.  When they returned to their bakery, they hung the medals,

pictures and certificates on the main wall of the bakery for everyone to see.  To this day,

they are still baking the chocolate chip, coconut, caramel, cinnamon Cameroon Cookie and

they are selling all of them everyday!

NO WATER FOR TOMMY

“Guess what, Tommy? I just learned that by body is made of a lot of water!” squealed

Dana. Tommy and Dana have been best friends and next door neighbors since they were

babies.

“Yeah? How do you know?”, Tommy asked Dana.

“Cindy told me while she was doing her science homework.”, stated Dana.

“I don’t believe her. Let’s go ask Professor Burns. He will know.”, said Tommy. “He

usually knows about things like that.”

“Okay!”, said Dana. “Let’s go now!”

Dana and Tommy rode their bikes through the neighborhood to Professor Burns’ house.

They knocked at his door.

“I hope he isn’t in his lab in the back yet.” said Dana. Just then he opened his front door.

“Good morning friends! How are you today? What brings you here today?”, asked the

Professor.

“Good morning Professor Burns! We are fine! We came because we want to know if it is

true that our bodies are made of water?”, asked Tommy.

“Good! I see you two are ready to learn! Let’s go to my lab. I can show you better there.”,

said Professor Burns.

Professor Burns, Dana and Tommy walked through the house, out the back door and down

the walk to the lab.  They reached the lab and sat around one of Professor Burns’ large,

black, stone rectangular tables.

“The human body is nearly 60 percent water. This is a little over one half water, which

equals to a little more than 11 gallons in an adult! Water is all over your body. Your blood,

muscles and bones are all made of water.  That is one of the reasons why your body floats

in water!”, explained Professor Burns.

“Wow!”, said Tommy. “Your sister was right, Dana.”

“She also told me that we have to drink lots of water everyday, or we would run out of

water.”, said Dana.

“Yuck!”, yelled Tommy. “I don’t like water! It tastes nasty!”

“ What your sister said is somewhat true , Dana. The water in our bodies does many

important things.  It keeps our bodies cool by perspiring or what you would call sweating.

It takes food and oxygen to areas of your body where it is needed by using your blood. It

removes waste from your body in the forms of urine and feces.”, explained Professor

Burns.

“Gee Professor, water sure does a lot of things in your body….”, said Tommy,”but I still

don’t like it!”

“Let’s look at how water maintains your temperature. Tommy, are your hands dry? Put on

this rubber glove and keep it on until I tell you to take it off.”, instructed Professor Burns.

“When it is very hot outside, and you have been weeding Mrs. Green’s flowerbeds, you

start to “sweat”. That is one of the ways your body cools off!”, said Professor Burns.

“It’s kind of like you have a fire started and you pour water on the fire to put it out!”, said

Dana.

“Right!”, said Professor Burns.”Oh by the way. Tommy, you can take that glove off now.

What has happened to your hand?”

“My hand is all wet!”,said Tommy.

“Your body started to cool you hand with water.”, said Dana.

“Very good!”, said Professor Burns.

Professor Burns reached for his long handled mirror. He placed the mirror under his nose

as he spoke. “Another way your body cools itself with water is with water in a different

form called steam.  When you exhale, your release small amounts of water from your lungs

in the form of a gas called steam. Let’s look at the mirror now.”

“Gee, it’s all fogged up!”, said Dana.

“Yeah, just like our bathroom mirror when we take a hot shower!”, said Tommy.

Professor Burns explained further. “Another way to cool the body is to drink water. Your

body lets you know it’s time to add water when……?”

“YOU GET THIRSTY!” they all yelled together.

“It takes a lot of work to keep your temperature regulated in hot weather, so that means

that your body has to work harder, burn more fuel, which causes more waste! What do you

think would happen if you don’t help keep that water supply high?”, asked Professor

Burns.

“You would get really hot and explode?”, asked Dana.

“You would get very sick?”, asked Tommy.

“The lack of water is called dehydration. There are 3 basic stages of dehydration:

I.  Mild. The body will have thirst, dry, chapped lips, dizziness and headache.

II. Moderate. The body will have a dry mouth, sunken eyes, skin that doesn’t

bounce back when quickly pinched and released and low urine output.

III. Severe. You can see rapid breathing, cold hands and feet, blue lips, mental

                  confusion and sleepiness.

Mild dehydration can be self-treated by just drinking water.

Moderate dehydration may require the assistance of your doctor.

Severe dehydration is very serious and requires that you get to a hospital right away for

treatment.”, explained Professor Burns.

“I think I am starting to like water!”, said Tommy.

“How much water is enough for the human body?”, asked Dana.

“When the weather is hot and you are not active, both of you are six years old, so your

body requires at least 45 cups of water per day. That is 360 ounces per day or roughly 3

gallon.  The older you get, the more you need, so add one 8 ounce cup per year you grow

older. Adults require about 720 ounces per day or a little more than 5 and one half gallons.

Remember this is based on activity levels and weather.”, stated Professor Burns.

“That sure seems like a lot!”, said Tommy.

“Not if you think about how much water you are losing through sweat, rapid exhalation

while exercising in the heat and urination.”, said Professor Burns.” Some fruits and

vegetables also have a high water content and by eating them, you help maintain your

water levels, but nothing can totally take the place of water.”

“Don’t forget that you can become dehydrated during cold weather too!  You just don’t

sweat as much, therefore you don’t notice it, but you still have to keep on drinking water.

Water is still needed to carry fuel and oxygen to the organs of your body even when it is

cold outside.” , reminded Professor Burns.

“Let’s go back to the house for a snack and something to drink.”

“Yeah, like a tall glass of cold water!”, said Tommy.

“Right!”, said Dana.”You are starting to like water, Tommy!”
